About the Studio
The work started with a place I already knew.
HS Place Studio began with my own family's property – a place I knew through years of ordinary familiarity rather than a shot list. I knew how the land was used, which details carried history, and what would disappear from the story if I photographed only what was obvious.
Documenting it changed the way I thought about property imagery. A place isn't defined only by its architecture, acreage, or best view. It is also defined by the things that have accumulated there: worn gates, old equipment, working spaces, familiar paths, and the people who have shaped it over time.
The Beginning
Not everything important is obvious.
The first project became an exercise in looking more closely. The photographs that mattered weren't always the ones that explained the property most efficiently. Some simply recorded the details that made it recognizable to the people who knew it.
The First Place
It began closer to home than I expected.
HS Place Studio grew documenting my own family's property – a place I had known long before I ever thought to photograph it professionally.
I knew the roads, the gates, the equipment, the changing seasons, and the ordinary details that would have been easy to overlook. Photographing it taught me knowing a place well doesn't make it less interesting. It changes what you notice.
That became the foundation for how I approach every property now.
A different way of seeing
The work is shaped by more than photography.
My approach comes from a mix of visual art, scientific observation, aviation, and years spent around land, animals, and working properties. Those backgrounds influence how I look at scale, detail, structure, movement, and the relationship between a place and the people who use it.
01 – Visual + Technical
Art taught me to look closely.
A background in fine art and medical art shaped the way I think about composition, accuracy, proportion, and detail. I am interested in images that are visually strong, but also truthful to the place they describe.
02 – Land + Living systems
The property is never just the building.
My background in animal science and medicine and years spent around working properties inform the way I photograph land, structures, animals, and the relationships between them. Use matters. So does context.
03 – Aerial Perspective
Sometimes the clearest view is from above.
I am an FAA-certified private pilot and have experience flying multiple drone platforms. Aviation has taught me to think about terrain, access, scale, weather, orientation, and how a property fits into the landscape around it.
